Cleaning your window screens can be intimidating, especially if you have a lot of windows in your home. However, with the simple tips below, you can get your window screens sparkling clean with very little effort.

Here’s what you need to know about cleaning your window screens and finding professional window screen services in your area.

Take the Screens Out of Your Windows

While you may be tempted to try to clean your window screens without removing them from the window frames, this generally doesn’t allow you to do the most thorough job. You’ll need to remove the screens from your windows, so you can scrub the mesh screen and the entire metal frame surrounding it.

This also allows you to clean the inside of the window frame and the metal track where the screen sits, where debris, insects, and dirt are more likely to accumulate.

Scrub Your Screens Gently

To clean your window screens, gently scrub them with warm, soapy water and a soft-bristled brush. Dish soap is often preferred since it cuts grease so well and easily breaks down outdoor dirt and debris that may be built up on your screens. Most people choose to do this in their shower or bathtub where the screens can be soaked in warm water for a short period of time to loosen grime.

Repair or Replace Torn or Broken Screens

As you’re cleaning your window screens, look for tears in the mesh, gasketing that has become brittle, or bent or broken metal framing. You may be able to make repairs, such as patching a hole in the screen with a small piece of replacement mesh, or you may be able to save the metal window frame and replace the entire mesh screen within it.

That said, repairing window screens can be somewhat complicated if you’re not well-versed in these types of projects. If you cannot repair a window screen, you may want to consider simply replacing it with a new one.

Allow Your Window Screens to Dry

Once you finish scrubbing and rinsing your window screens, allow them to completely air dry before reinstalling them into your window frames. You may want to set them out in the sun briefly to expedite the drying process. UV rays also naturally help sanitize your window frames, so they will be less likely to contribute to allergies, sneezing and coughing, and other similar symptoms resulting from indoor air pollution.

Replace the Screens In Your Windows

Once your window screens are completely dry after being cleaned, it’s time to put them back in your window frames. Ideally, you will have also cleaned your window glass and frames so that you are not putting a clean screen in a still dirty frame.
